(PRLEAK ) October 15, 2009 – People with developmental disabilities are an integral part of the American workforce, and offers a number of benefits to companies that hire them. Life Skills, a United Way agency, has been coaching people with developmental disabilities to prepare for employment in the St. Louis area for the past 45 years. To commemorate National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October the agency has endeavored to showcase the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Over 130 employers work in conjunction with Like Skills in the St. Louis area to provide gainful employment to people with developmental disabilities. The agency highlights the numerous benefits that employers derive from hiring people with disabilities.

According to a study conducted by Washington Mutual, Inc. people with developmental disabilities are more likely to remain loyal to their employer. The three-year-study concluded that the attrition rate was a mere 8 percent as compared to 45 percent in the general workforce. Employers have the benefit of reduced costs with a lesser attrition rate.

Companies that hire workers with developmental disabilities are eligible for economic incentives under the federal tax credit program, which includes the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. Companies are eligible for a reduction of $2,400 in tax liability per qualified employee. Consumer awareness and corporate responsibility are at an all time high, with customers preferring to support companies that are more socially responsible. By employing workers with developmental disabilities, companies can gain social recognition amongst communities, which is itself a positive branding tool.

As per a survey by the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, around 22% of the 68% that are unemployed wish to work. Figures indicate that only 32% of people with developmental disabilities in the age group of 18-64 are gainfully employed. Life Skills is working towards achieving a success rate of 91 percent by helping with recruitment, job coaching, and retention of people with developmental disabilities. Over half of the agency's clients are employed in office administration, record keeping, and manufacturing, among others.
