Belleville, Ill. (PRLEAK ) October 2, 2009 –Chronic illnesses have been growing at an alarming rate all throughout the United States. This includes heart diseases, hypertension, arthritis, diabetes, and a host of other illnesses, creating the need for case managers to handle healthcare issues. Coupled with this, the cost of managing healthcare has increased phenomenally. In order to raise awareness on this issue among the medical community, the Case Management Society of America CMSA in conjunction Allsup, and other organizations, has organized a National Case Management Week from Oct. 11 to 17, 2009. Allsup is a provider of Social Security Disability and Medicare partner.

Case managers can add a new dimension to Disease Management. According to CMSA's Case in Point magazine, the phenomenal costs involved in managing chronic illnesses are due to an estimated 5 million American suffering from congestive heart failure. According to reports in the Jan. 2009 edition of the Health Affairs Journal, chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes accounts for about 75 % of healthcare spending.

This increase in healthcare costs is the main ‘case' in point for the appointment of case managers. Case management contributes to patient safety and can streamline healthcare support for patients and their families, thereby improving their quality of life. Effective cost management solutions can be derived from case management. Apart from assessing and monitoring patients, case managers can also determine patients' eligibility for treatment programs and the arrangement of additional services like housing.

Most patients and their family members that seek healthcare assistance and intervention are in touch with case managers on a regular basis. Case managers have this opportunity from Oct. 11 to 17, 2009 to further their cause. The event is also a tribute to professionals working with government agencies, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare environments. Allsup will be supplying free poster for case managers, clinics, and other healthcare groups during National Case Management Week.
