Burnaby, BC (PRLEAK ) September 27, 2009 – As per Dr. John Yang, Dean of Faculty and Clinic Director at PCU College of Holistic Medicine, Chinese or Tui Na, as well as Western-style massage therapies, are fundamentally associated with health and wellness. The only difference is that the Chinese technique is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory of Qi or vital energy. The concepts and pattern of both therapies are similar.

The college’s training programs are designed to teach students the advantages of both Chinese and Western massage techniques. This is good news for Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) too. They can learn the fundamentals of Chinese Massage and Acupuncture on a course-by-course basis and expand their knowledge of Chinese therapies.

Western massage techniques are based on working with the nerves and muscles in order to relieve pain. Tui Na on the other hand involves stimulating certain pressure points along the body’s meridian line in order to increase the flow of Qi. Dr. Tang agrees that though the two styles differ, the concepts are similar and therefore complement each other, resulting in a wide range of benefits to patients. Tui Na can treat a number of conditions including body ache, pain, and deeper physical and emotional issues by restoring the body’s flow of energy.

PCU students stand to benefit by learning a combination of Chinese massage, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and western medical practices. According to Dr. Yang, the objective of introducing the basic concepts of Western medical practices is to help students understand human health conditions and establish a better level of communication with their patients and other Western medical professionals.
In order to enroll in the course, aspiring candidates must have completed two years of post-secondary education. The Tui Na / Anmo (Chinese Massage) program is a one year course conducted at the PCU College campus in Burnaby.
