Edinburgh, Scotland (PRLEAK) October 29, 2009 â On the 28th of October 2009, OpenOffice.org Version 3.0 was downloaded by the one hundred millionth person, precisely one year since its launch. Champagne bottles are ready to pop in Orvieto, Italy on Nov. 4, at the annual conference of the OpenOffice.org Community. Version 3.1 was released in May and the beta version of 3.2 is already undergoing tests.
Spokesman for the organizers, Italo Vignoli, shares the sentiments of millions of others, and is honored at Italy being chosen as the venue for such a memorable occasion. The Italian version of OpenOffice.org has over 8 million users in the twelve months leading to October 2009, which is a million up from the previous year. Vignoli stresses the fact that there has been a significant increase in personal productivity office suites, with users being able to get what they want through OpenOffice.org. The best thing is that users are never forced to buy other products that they may not even need. Vignoli extends an invitation to everyone who would love to come to the conference and join in the celebrations.
What is significant is that one hundred million downloads have been recorded from the OpenOffice.org website alone. However, this figure does not include a large number of Linux users who download software from their distributors. If you put a figure to this, and add the users who obtain OpenOffice.org from peer-to-peer networks, CDs, and other sources, the figure will be much higher.
About OpenOffice.org:
The OpenOffice.org Community is the global network of the open-source productivity suite, OpenOffice.org, which consists of a number of volunteer and sponsored contributors dedicated to developing state-of-the-art desktop productivity software at no cost. The open-source productivity suite consists of a word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, and database software applications similar to MSOffice from Microsoft. There are absolutely no costs involved in order to download the software. Upgrades and newer versions are also free. The virus-resistant software is easy to install and can read MsWord and Excel files. OpenOffice.org also has a world-wide technical support network.
A large number of sponsors like Sun Microsystems, who is incidentally also the founding sponsor and primary contributor, all work towards encouraging developers, testers, translators, and other to improve OpenOffice.org with every version.
