Philadelphia, PA (PRLEAK ) September 26, 2009 – As per research conducted by Excel Physical Therapy and Fitness, an out-patient therapy clinic with eight branches across Philadelphia, most people are unaware of Direct Access, the law that allows patients to be evaluated and treated by a certified physical therapist without prior prescription from a physician.
As per Jess Ostrowski, president of Excel Physical Therapy and Fitness, local governments haven’t pursued the law strongly enough, which would decrease the burden on referring physicians and enable patients to be treated quicker.
Having seen a number of cases of delayed treatment, Clinic Manager Valerie Brill is also of the opinion that early intervention is crucial for injured patients. Even though patients were aware that they needed treatment, they never knew they could approach a certified physical therapist immediately.
People with common conditions that include back and neck pain, arthritis, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome are eligible for Direct Access. This also includes athletes that need treatment due to injuries during training.
Athletes that have taken advantage of Direct Access include Ironman competitor, Hank page. After an Iliotibial band injury, and sciatic nerve pain, Page was able to see a physical therapist the next day, without interruption to his training schedule. Thanks to Direct Access, he was able to start a therapy program before he could get an appointment with his doctor. The good news was that he went on to compete in the second Ironman competition in July 2009.
According to a recent study by Dr. Jean Mitchell of Georgetown University and Dr. Greg deLissovoy of John Hopkins University, there are significant cost savings of approximately $1,200 per patient visit for both, the states, and insurance companies that offer Direct Access. The program is advocated by the American Physical Therapy Association.
